Best Selling Video Games of 2010

2010 has been a colorful year for video games. The year has seen quite a few successful sequels across all gaming platforms. Sales have been dominated by Nintendo titles. Halo returned with a great addition to its franchise and the last quarter sales spree by Call of Duty has made history. Following is a list of the best-selling video games of 2010 as of November 13, based on statistics provided by vgcharts.com.

Call of Duty: Black Ops (Multiplatform)

The seventh installment in the Call of Duty franchise took the gaming world by storm when it was released on November 9, 2010. Activision sold a total of roundabout 9.4 million copies of the game across multiple platforms (Xbox 3605,362,003, PS33,769,572, PC - 279,107) in the very first week, subsequently announcing that Black Ops had become the biggest entertainment launch to date.

Wii Sports (Wii)

Nintendo released Wii Sports as a launch title for their Wii console in the last quarter of 2006 and it is still selling like crazy. The multiple-sports simulation became the best selling game of all time when it surpassed the famous Super Mario Bros. in 2009. Wii Sports has sold approximately 8.9 million units so far this year and a total of over 66.9 million units since 2006!

It’s only natural for the sequel to Nintendo’s immensely successful sports sim to have a place on this list. Wii Sports Resort has sold a total of 19.7 million copies since its release in mid 2009 and a whopping 7.3 million units in 2010 so far.

Nintendo’s New Super Mario Bros. Wii, owing in part to the vast popularity of the Mario franchise, has sold approximately 6.7 million units in 2010 alone. Its total unit sales amount to 16.6 million since its release in Q4, 2009.

Halo: Reach (X360)

Microsoft really cashed in on the popularity of its now Xbox-exclusive franchise when it released Halo: Reach for the X360 on September 14, 2010. The game, amidst much critical acclaim, sold over 6.1 million in the first 9 weeks. In a review by IGN, Bungie’s final Halo title has been labeled as the best the franchise has to offer.

Pokemon Heart Gold / Soul Silver Version (DS)

Nintendo released added the HeartGold and SoulSilver versions to its Pokémon role-playing franchise in September, 2009. The DS games have sold a total of over 9.4 million units to date out of which about 5.9 million units have been sold in 2010.

With roundabout 5.8 million copies sold this year, Nintendo’s fitness game, Wii Fit Plus has bumped up its total sales to 14.4 million units since its release in October 2009 as an enhanced version of the original Wii Fit.

Nintendo added yet another successful title to the Mario franchise with the release of Super Mario Galaxy 2 for Wii on May 23, 2010. The sequel to 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy has sold about 4.7 million copies thus far.

Nintendo seems to be throwing one successful title after another at the world. With approximately 4.5 million units sold in the first 9 weeks after their release on September 18, 2010, Nintendo’s Pokémon Black and White version have earned more acclaim for the Pokémon RPG franchise.

Rockstar San Diego’s Red Dead Redemption has earned due ovation from critics and gamers alike. Since its release on May 18, 2010, the open world western action-adventure has sold roughly 3.6 million units for Xbox 360 and 3 million for PS3 thus far making a total of about 6.6 million units sold.
